University of Sydney

Every university is grounded in its reputation. It is a marker of value, trust and ethics that influence the talent, partnerships and investment that drive an institution forward. As one of the leading universities in the world, the University of Sydney has a powerful reputation built on an impressive track record of innovative research and impactful teaching. However, in the ever- evolving prestige economy no university can become complacent and the University of Sydney continues to strive to lead from the front to attract the best talent and maintain its place in the top tier of global higher education.
The challenge
With reputation heavily impacted by academic opinion and sentiment, the University has been keen to empower researchers to raise their visibility – to directly impact the awareness of their research, improve citation performance and, invoke collaboration opportunities.
The solution
The Brand Education worked collaboratively with the University of Sydney to offer training for academics to equip them with the skills, confidence and techniques to find their voice and raise the visibility of their research on social media.
Developed in partnership – a bespoke agenda was set to reflect the priorities for the organisation and the experience of the attendees.
Designed for scale – conducting the training virtually enabled more than 300 academics to attend and for the recording to be shared with those who could not attend.
Planned for interactivity – not only was the session planned to deliver practical learning throughout but the chat function allowed questions to be answered along the way.
Led by experts – subject matter experts ran the session with a blend of both internal and external speakers to ensure a breadth of experience.
Devised for action – topics covered within the session included practical insights and content strategies to set the context for implementation.
The outcome
The social media training provided an interactive session that delivered immediate impact. Attended by over 300 academics, the personalised and expert led approach was extremely well received as demonstrated by the post workshop survey:
- 84% rated the workshop very good or excellent
2. 75% found the content extremely or very useful
3. 72% felt extremely or very confident in posting their work after the session
The impact of the training was also evident in the feedback from attending academics who highlighted the benefits of the format, the experience of the speakers, the relevance of the topics and an appreciation that the university made this investment on their behalf:
“Great workshop – opened my eyes and mind to the use of social media. Look forward to following everyone on twitter @Syd_Uni☺️”
“Very eye opening and appreciate the support the university is providing. Most, if not all, were aspects of social media that I had not considered at all.”
“Engaging, I learnt some new tricks, experiences and knowledgeable speakers.”
“The content was interesting and detailed with practice sessions.”
“Interactive, informative, not super dense and easy to understand.”
